There is a widespread image of the Camino del Norte: a pilgrim always advancing beside the Cantabrian Sea, between cliffs, beaches and fishing villages, on the road to Santiago. The reality is considerably more interesting. The Norte does not follow the coast continuously, nor does it reproduce metre by metre a medieval route.
