The Route of Els Cartoixans, or the Route of the Carthusians, weaves a fascinating tapestry of history, spirituality, and nature in Catalonia’s Montsant Natural Park. This hiking itinerary connects the village of Albarca with Cabacés, with an optional detour to the historic Escaladei Charterhouse. The trail, steeped in heritage, offers an ideal weekend adventure for nature enthusiasts and history (and wine) lovers alike.
The Great Cartuja de Escaladei
The origins of this route trace back to the establishment of the Escaladei Charterhouse in 1215 –a cultural, economic, religious medieval powerhouse in the Catalonian Priorat, a celebrated wine producing region that traces its winemaking production all the way back to this monastery. For over six centuries, this Carthusian monastery played a pivotal role in the economic, social, and cultural development of the region, as monks boosted wine production in the region.
The need for reliable pathways to connect the monastery with surrounding villages (to bring in grapes and distribute wine and other monastic goods) gave rise to a network of trails, some of which are preserved today. By the 16th century, the “Camino de los Cartujos” was documented as a mule track facilitating travel and trade, connecting the monastery to key routes like the Reus-Lleida royal road near Albarca.

The modern route
Today, the Route of Els Cartoixans has been reimagined for hikers, serving as a portal to Montsant’s natural and cultural treasures. The route traverses the Serra Major, skirts ancient farmhouses, and follows paths once used for herding livestock. Cobbled sections of the trail stand as living artifacts of its historical significance.
Managed by the Montsant Natural Park, this route offers hikers a chance to explore the region’s exceptional landscapes while appreciating its rich heritage. The journey is divided into two main sections, forming a circular weekend trek.
Itinerary Overview
- Day 1: Crossing the Serra Major (Cabacés to Albarca)
Distance: 19 km
Description: This section crosses the Serra Major, Montsant’s towering mountain ridge, renowned for its dramatic cliffs and panoramic vistas. The path ascends to elevations between 600–700 meters, traversing oak groves, vineyards, and rocky outcrops. The trail provides a perfect introduction to the region’s biodiversity, with sweeping views that inspire awe and introspection.

Tramo A: Albarca to Escaladei
Distance: 12.5 km

Along the way, hikers pass through lush vineyards and encounter preserved cobblestone pathways. The monastery, at the very base of the Montsant, offers a glimpse into the Carthusian monks’ ascetic way of life. Visitors can even walk into a rebuilt monastic Carthusian cell.
Tramo B: Escaladei to Cabacés
Distance: 11 km
Highlights: The final segment follows a route back to Cabacés. It meanders through the foothills, blending the serenity of natural landscapes with a sense of historical continuity.
Key features of the route
- Natural Landscapes:
Montsant (Catalan for “holy mountain,”) is a sanctuary of biodiversity. Its rugged terrain is adorned with Mediterranean flora, from evergreen holm oaks to delicate wildflowers, and is home to a variety of bird species and relatively small mammals. The trail offers numerous opportunities to connect with the park’s unspoiled beauty.
- Cultural heritage:
The Escaladei Charterhouse is surely the crown jewel of this route. Founded by Carthusian monks in the early 13th century, it was the first monastery of its kind in the Iberian Peninsula. The ruins, though partially restored, convey the grandeur and sobriety of monastic life.
- Historical pathways:
Hikers will traverse sections of original cobblestone roads, preserved as a testament to the trail’s former use as a mule track. These paths are a direct link to the centuries-old traditions of trade, pilgrimage, and pastoralism.
- Accessibility:
With moderate elevation changes (1,400 m ascent, 1,800 m descent) and well-marked trails, the route is suitable for hikers with a basic to intermediate level of fitness. The loop design makes it easy to tailor the journey to individual preferences.
Practical information:
Starting Point: Albarca
