Church of Saint Severinus Abbot

The Church of Saint Severinus Abbot, a National Monument and the oldest sacred building in San Severo, has been recorded since 1059 as the city’s first parish, mother church, and civic temple. Originally a small Benedictine church along the Via Sacra Langobardorum, it grew thanks to pilgrims traveling toward Monte Sant’Angelo. Expanded under the Angevin rule, it was severely damaged by the 1627 earthquake but later enriched with splendid Baroque decoration. Its interior preserves frescoes, paintings, a majestic 1750 pipe organ, the refined 1758 wooden choir, and the statue of the patron saint, together with precious relics. After long closures and partial restorations, it reopened in 2008 and was further restored between 2021 and 2023, regaining the vivid Baroque ornamentation that makes it both a historical treasure and a spiritual symbol of San Severo.
