    Prophet Daniel’s tomb, Roman remains

Mosque and tomb identified as belonging to the biblical prophet Daniel, also revered by Islam, because although he does not appear in the Koran, Islamic tradition considers him one of God’s messengers. Another tradition locates his tomb in Susa, Iran.

According to an ancient Muslim tradition, the prophet Daniel was in Tarsus, in the time of King Nebuchadnezzar, and ended the famine that devastated the city. When her tomb was rediscovered in the 11th century, Caliph Umar ordered her to be reburied in the bed of the Berdan River (which then ran through Tarsus) to prevent it from being stolen. During conservation work, two 1st century Roman arches were discovered that formed a bridge over the tomb.
