Hermitage Virgen de las Fuentes José Luis Díaz Segovia

Hermitage of the Virgen de las Fuentes

The hermitage of Nuestra Señora de las Fuentes, in Cardeñosa, is a construction of popular style, with an almost square rectangular plan and a four-sided roof of Arabic tiles. Its walls are masonry and it has only small windows. The main façade, on the north side, has a lintel doorway flanked by windows and crowned by a bell tower. On the outside there is a transept, which enhances the simplicity and solemnity of this structure, characteristic of the religious architecture of the area.

The devotion to the Virgen de las Fuentes is popular in Avila because of the legend of the supposed appearance of the Virgin to a shepherd in the Almar River during the Middle Ages.
