Hermitage of La Lugareja José Luis Díaz Segovia

Hermitage of La Lugareja

The hermitage of La Lugareja, also known as the church of Santa María de Gómez Román, is a Mudejar monument located near Arévalo. It was built in the 12th century and is considered one of the best examples of Mudejar art in Avila, although it was left unfinished. The current building is the chevet of an old Cistercian church, with three apses decorated with brick arches and a large prismatic dome over the central apse. It was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1931, although public access is currently restricted.

Inside, the semicircular apses and the central dome, decorated with brick arches and surmounted by a hemispherical dome, stand out. This structure creates a visual play of volumes and textures, enhanced by decorative carvings in the spandrels.
