The former palace of the Duke of Nájera, located in Navarrete, La Rioja, is an emblematic 15th century building that has been renovated and converted into the Ignatius Inn. This palace, where the inn is located, was the place where Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Jesuits, stayed as a knight under Antonio Manrique de Lara, second Duke of Nájera, from 1517 to 1521. During his stay, Loyola accompanied the duke in several military and political enterprises, including the defense of Pamplona against the Navarre and the French, where he was wounded and subsequently experienced his spiritual conversion. There is speculation about his possible relationship with María Villarreal de Loyola, mentioned in the will of the duke’s daughter, although there is no conclusive documentary evidence in this regard.
The palace, with its history linked to Ignatius of Loyola, becomes a place of both historical and spiritual interest. Now, as Posada Ignatius, it offers guests the opportunity to stay in a setting loaded with historical and cultural significance, as well as the chance to explore the area where Loyola lived a crucial stage as a young knight.
