Church of St Mary at Güeñes

The Church of Santa María de Güeñes is one of the most remarkable historic churches in the Basque Country. Built from the 15th century onward on the site of an earlier temple, it combines Late Gothic, Renaissance and early Baroque features. Its spacious hall-church layout, with three nearly equal-height aisles covered by intricate rib vaults, creates a striking interior. The elegant Sun Portal (Portada del Sol), where Gothic ornamentation blends with Renaissance design, is among the church’s most distinguished artistic elements.

Inside, visitors encounter an exceptional polychrome high altarpiece, considered one of the earliest and most monumental Baroque works of the 17th century in the region. Additional altarpieces, sculptures, paintings and liturgical treasures enrich the church, including a black marble baptismal font from Markina. Together, these works testify to centuries of religious devotion and artistic patronage in Güeñes.
