The Chapel of A Magdalena, located directly on the Portuguese Way just over four kilometres from Santiago de Compostela, has long been closely connected with the pilgrim journey. O Milladoiro was traditionally one of the first places from which travellers approaching from the south could see the towers of Santiago Cathedral. The small chapel therefore offered pilgrims a place to rest, find shelter and pray before walking the final kilometres to the Apostle’s tomb.
Although some traditions date its origins to the 10th or 11th century, the surviving medieval structure can more cautiously be placed around the 12th century. Parts of its Romanesque masonry remain, particularly around the apse and northern wall, while much of its present appearance dates from the 1863 renovation. Today, surrounded by modern O Milladoiro, the chapel remains a modest but significant witness to centuries of pilgrimage at the gates of Compostela.
