Al Muharraq Monastery

The Al-Muharraq Monastery (Deir el-Muharraq), located at the foot of Mount Qusqam in Upper Egypt, is regarded by Coptic tradition as the oldest monastery in the world and one of the most sacred Christian sites in Egypt. According to ecclesiastical sources, the Holy Family lived here for six months and ten days, the longest stay of their journey through Egypt.

At the spiritual core of the monastery stands the Ancient Church of the Virgin Mary, built in the 4th century directly above the cave where the Holy Family found refuge. The altar rests over this cave, making the church one of the most venerated sites in Coptic Christianity and often considered among the earliest Christian churches still in continuous use. The cave itself, carved into the rock, remains a place of silence, prayer, and deep devotion.

The monastic complex also includes a 6th–7th century fortress, reflecting the defensive role monasteries once played. Within it lies the Church of Saint Michael, along with former monastic quarters that reveal the ascetic and communal life of the monks. Nearby, the Church of Saint George, built in the late 19th century, is known for its Byzantine-style icons and painted depictions of the Twelve Apostles.

Set between the vast western desert and the fertile Nile Valley, Al-Muharraq has long been a center of pilgrimage, monastic life, and spiritual refuge. Each year, especially during the major June pilgrimage, thousands of believers gather at this site, often called “the Second Bethlehem”, marking the most significant station of the Holy Family’s journey in Egypt.
