Elijah’s Grotto
Catholic church within the Carmelite Monastery of Stella Maris in Haifa (Israel), is a 19th century building, built on the remains of other previous churches.
It is located above the grotto where the prophet Elijah had the revelation of God as a “gentle breeze.”
The dome, decorated by the Maltese Carmelite Luigi Poggi (1924-1928), represents episodes from the Bible, the most relevant being the scene of the prophet Elijah ascending to heaven in a chariot of fire. Below the altar is the cave of Elijah, where according to the Old Testament the Prophet lived for some time. Inside the cave there is an altar carved into the rock, with a small statue of the Prophet.
