Monastic complex from the 6th century
Early Christian monastery supposedly founded by St Fionan in the 6th century and abandoned in the 12th century. Skellig Michael has also been a pilgrimage and penance site during medieval age for people coming from all Europe. In recent times Skellig Michael became a famous Star Wars localization.
More than 600 steps lead to the top of the main island mountain, to reach a monastic complex, consisting of cells, oratory and a church where the tomb of St Fionan. Its characteristic circular stone constructions called clochain stand out. The site can be reached only by boat from May to September.
