The church of Santa María la Mayor de Villanueva de Gómez, now in ruins, dates from the 14th to the 17th centuries and mixes Gothic and Renaissance styles. It was built in three phases and is related to the lordship of Gómez Dávila, who promoted part of its works. The building suffered a fire in 1971, leaving standing only the granite chancel and some original elements, such as the side doorway with the coats of arms of the Dávila family and Bishop Carrillo. The old church also included a brick tower and bells now located in the present church.
