Legend has it that San Rocco, a pilgrim and protector against the plague, passed through Roccamontepiano on his journey to Rome and took refuge in the sacred grotto. According to tradition, the saint, weak and starving, was miraculously fed by a dog that brought him bread stolen from its master’s table each day. Over time, this site became a major pilgrimage destination. Every August 16, thousands of devotees visit the sanctuary to drink the miraculous water and purchase souvenirs such as ceramic jugs featuring the saint’s image and the year of their visit.
