Cruz de Fierro

The Cruz de Ferro, or Iron Cross, is one of the most symbolic landmarks on the French Way. Standing at around 1,500 metres above sea level between Foncebadón and Manjarín, it consists of a tall wooden pole crowned by an iron cross, a replica of the original now preserved in Astorga. Its precise origins remain uncertain: the site has been associated with Roman boundary markers and ancient stone-piling traditions, while Christian tradition links the cross to Abbot Gaucelmo, who provided hospitality for pilgrims in Foncebadón in the early 11th century.

At its base rises a huge mound created by generations of travellers leaving stones behind. Today, many pilgrims carry a stone from home and place it beneath the cross as an act of prayer, remembrance, gratitude or release from something they wish to leave behind. This simple ritual has made the Cruz de Ferro one of the most meaningful stops on the Camino, a moment of reflection in the mountains before continuing towards El Bierzo and eventually Santiago de Compostela.
