Church of St Mary of Raccomandati

The Church of the Madonna dei Raccomandati in San Demetrio ne’ Vestini reflects a deep-rooted devotion to the Virgin Mary under the title Madonna dei Raccomandati (Our Lady of the Recommended). This devotion, originating in Norman times, symbolizes the Virgin’s special protection over her faithful followers. The term Raccomandati signifies those entrusted to her care, and the cult spread across regions such as Sicily and central Italy, including Sciacca and Castel di Lucio. In San Demetrio, the devotion is represented by the majestic painting above the high altar, depicting the Madonna dei Raccomandati with Saint Demetrius of Thessalonica at her feet. This dedication highlights her role as an intercessor and protector, a belief that has persisted through centuries. The church itself, built in 1820, stands as a testament to this enduring veneration, with its rich artistic heritage and symbolic design. The exterior boasts a three-section façade, a triangular pediment, and a square bell tower. Severely damaged during the 2009 earthquake, the church remains inaccessible as of 2023.
