Church and Birthplace of St John of the Cross

The Church and Birthplace of St John of the Cross (born Juan de Yepes Álvarez) in Fontiveros is located in the place where the great mystic was born in 1542. Today, however, it is a convent of Discalced Carmelites built in 1873 on the remains of his birthplace. Although it is not the original building, the place retains a strong link with the Renaissance poet and mystic, attracting numerous visitors who follow in the footsteps of his life and spiritual legacy. The first chapel, connected to the adjacent monastery complex, dates from 1673.

Inside, a Baroque altarpiece stands out, with a refined carving of the saint, inspired by Gregorio Fernández, and a small figure that could be a realistic portrait of the mystic. The convent choir, the old cemetery and the monks’ oratory have also been preserved, as well as the convent building that now houses a High School. This enclave is a point of reference for those who want to know more about this famous poet and his spirituality.
