The Cathedral of Santa María rises above Tui’s historic centre, overlooking the River Miño and the Portuguese border. Construction began in the late 11th century and continued over several centuries, creating a remarkable combination of Romanesque solidity and Gothic refinement. Romanesque capitals filled with medieval creatures, a 12th-century chapter house and the northern portal survive alongside the monumental western façade, completed around 1225 and regarded as one of the earliest major ensembles of Gothic sculpture on the Iberian Peninsula. Its fortress-like appearance also reflects Tui’s strategic position in a frontier landscape shaped for centuries by political and military conflict.
The cathedral is also an important spiritual landmark on the Camino de Santiago. Its large Gothic cloister, built in the second half of the 13th century, is the only fully preserved medieval cloister among Galicia’s cathedrals and remains one of the building’s most atmospheric spaces. The cathedral also preserves the relics of Saint Telmo, closely associated with the history of Tui, together with an outstanding collection of Baroque liturgical furnishings, including the choir stalls, the organs dedicated to Saint James and Saint Telmo, and the Chapel of the Relics.
The Cathedral Museum, housed in the former Chapel of Saint Catherine, adds another layer to the visit. Its collection includes a remarkable 15th-century coconut ciborium, a medieval statue of the Virgin and fragments of an early-16th-century Lamentation over the Dead Christ. Particularly notable are several pieces of silverwork from the 15th and 16th centuries, some associated with Jewish and converso craftsmen, revealing the cultural complexity of this border city between Galicia and Portugal.
