Anafora is a retreat center in the Egyptian desert dedicated to lifting up “every person, the whole person.” It recreates the spirit of the early Desert Fathers through a life of simplicity, prayer, community and hospitality. Rooted in Coptic Orthodox spirituality, Anafora welcomes guests from around the world into a rhythm shaped by daily liturgy, contemplative evening prayers, and wide spaces for silence, reflection and renewal. Its symbol, the Coptic Alpha depicted as a bird, reflects the belief that every moment – every breath – is a new beginning.
Beyond being a place of retreat, Anafora is an educational and social hub offering training programs in counseling, Bible and patristic studies, women’s empowerment, youth support, and vocational skills. It functions as a non-profit center integrating spirituality with ecological awareness, organic farming, recycling, artisan workshops and community life. Visitors encounter a self-sustaining ecosystem with gardens, animals, handmade crafts, and a multilingual library. Together, residents and guests co-create an atmosphere of acceptance, responsibility and transformative peace.
