Just a few kilometers from Guardiagrele, in the peaceful and refreshing area of Bocca di Valle, lies the Sanctuary-Cave of Andrea Bafile, a site of deep historical and spiritual significance. This natural shrine, nestled within the Mother Mountain, symbolizes the sacrifice and bravery of Abruzzo’s soldiers throughout history.
Since September 20, 1923, the cave has been the resting place of Andrea Bafile, a highly decorated hero of World War I, who fell in battle at the Piave River in 1918. Inside, visitors can admire three magnificent ceramic panels created by artists Basilio and Tommaso Cascella.
Every July, Guardiagrele pays tribute to Bafile with an official ceremony attended by authorities and representatives of the National Association of Italian Sailors (ANMI). The cave also preserves the inscription of the speech awarding him the Gold Medal for Military Valor, recognizing his selfless courage in saving his men at the cost of his own life.
