The Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli, located near Monte Sant’Angelo, is traditionally linked to St. Francis of Assisi, who is said to have founded it after his pilgrimage to the shrine of St. Michael the Archangel. The rectangular church preserves a 13th-century Gothic portal depicting the Virgin among angels and a 17th-century niche in the apse. Though many frescoes have been lost, the site fostered Marian devotion, once centered on an 18th-century Neapolitan statue now kept in Santa Maria Maggiore.
