The Church of Santa Maria del Balzo, originally dedicated to Saint Nicholas, is located in Musellaro, Italy, and dates back to the medieval period. It was restored in 1538, as indicated by an inscription mentioning Charles V of Habsburg. The church became associated with the relic of the Holy Cross, which was brought from the Holy Land in the 13th century by Count Del Balzo and gifted to the local baron. This event led to the construction of a chapel within the church, marking the beginning of the site’s religious significance. A miracle in the 17th century, involving a bleeding crucifix and the resurrection of a child, further strengthened its spiritual importance.
The church, integrated into a medieval castle, features two naves, a baroque-style altar, and a porticoed terrace accessible via a steep staircase. The lower chapel houses the Holy Cross relic, framed by rich mosaics and a painted ceiling from 1953 by Giovanni Hajnal. The stained-glass windows were designed by Guido Veroi. The church remains a symbol of devotion and local tradition.
