The Sanctuary of the Immaculate Conception in Qala, Gozo, is considered one of the most ancient Christian places of worship in Malta. Believed to be built over a former pagan temple, it has served as a spiritual haven for centuries, especially during natural disasters, pirate raids, and epidemics. Archaeological and historical evidence connects it to Byzantine Christianity and even suggests continuous devotion during the Arab period. The sanctuary became a beacon of hope for the people of Gozo. In 1615, Bishop Baldassare Caligares changed its dedication from the Assumption to the Immaculate Conception to fulfill a personal vow, donating the titular painting himself. The sanctuary is also associated with the hermit Saint Karrew, said to be buried in its crypt and venerated for healing miracles. Despite being declared profaned after pirate attacks in 1575, it was restored by the local faithful and adorned with graffiti and ex-votos from mariners and pilgrims. It famously withstood the massive 1693 earthquake with little damage, reinforcing the belief in the Virgin’s protection. The sanctuary’s icon was crowned in 1954 and again in 1979, marking it as a site of enduring devotion.
