Sanctuary of Santa Maria del Monte

The Sanctuary of Santa Maria del Monte in Bolognano, Italy, has origins dating back to the 9th century when Emperor Louis II annexed the area to the Abbey of San Clemente in Casauria. The sanctuary is linked to a legend in which the Virgin Mary appeared on an oak tree, healing a mute child, and instructing him to bring a sacred image to Bolognano. A dispute arose among nearby villages over the painting, so it was placed on an oxen-drawn cart, and the animals stopped at the current location, where the sanctuary was later built. The Franciscans took over the site in 1658, using it as a place of prayer and retreat.

The sanctuary houses a 16th-century painting of the Madonna and Child, restored in 1542, featuring vivid colors and a golden background. During World War II, the convent was occupied by Nazi forces, who left marks of destruction inside. The site remains an important pilgrimage destination, with the annual August 18 celebration drawing devotees from across the Orta and Pescara valleys.
