Monastery of Arbore

The Arbore Monastery, founded in 1503 by the high official Luca Arbore on his estate in the village of the same name, is a gem of Moldavian architecture and has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993 as one of the Painted Churches of Northern Moldavia. The church, dedicated to the Beheading of St. John the Baptist, is notable for its rectangular plan without a tower and its refined silhouette. Its greatest treasure lies in the exterior frescoes painted in 1541 by Dragos Coman of Iași.

These vibrant scenes, rich in narrative and expressiveness, include a monumental Last Judgment, the Tree of Jesse, the Parable of the Prodigal Son, and the Akathist Hymn. The style blends Byzantine and Renaissance influences with a dominant color palette of green, red, and turquoise-blue. The figures are dynamic and uniquely expressive, reflecting a humanistic approach rare in 16th-century Romanian religious art. Slavonic inscriptions and depictions of protective saints highlight the spiritual and cultural splendor of medieval Moldavia.
