The Hermitage of Sant’Onofrio is located in the Majella, within the municipality of Serramonacesca, near the Abbey of San Liberatore a Majella. It is believed that its origin is connected to this Benedictine monastery and that it was originally a place of retreat and prayer before being repurposed for agricultural and pastoral activities. In 1948, the structure underwent a significant expansion, particularly in height. The hermitage is built under a large rock, with a church and a residential area spread across two levels.
Inside the church, above the altar, there is a niche housing a statue of Sant’Onofrio. Two small doors lead to a rock-hewn space where the “Cradle of Sant’Onofrio” is located, a hollow in the stone where pilgrims lie down as part of a healing ritual. The interior retains remnants of the original structure, including holes in the walls that once supported the old wooden roof. Behind the altar, a passageway leads to a cave that remains largely unexplored, where burial remains have been discovered.
