Church of St Nicholas

The Church of San Nicola, or mother church of Orsogna, is a significant historical and religious site in the province of Chieti. It has been documented since 1097, originally linked to the monastery of San Barbato in Pollutri. Over the centuries, it underwent multiple reconstructions, most notably in 1776, when King Ferdinand IV ordered its rebuilding under the supervision of architects Pietro Paolo Francia and Agnello Francia. By 1810, the church was partially completed, though its bell tower remained unfinished until the early 20th century.

During World War II, the church suffered extensive damage and was rebuilt in the 1950s, preserving its original design as much as possible. Today, its architecture blends Baroque and Neoclassical elements, featuring a brick façade, twin domes, and a bell tower, restored in 1954. The interior houses mosaics, frescoes, an organ by Taddeo Salvini, and numerous religious paintings and sculptures.
