Church of St Mary Major

The Church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Caramanico is a medieval temple with an impressive Gothic façade. Its pointed arch portal, created in 1476 by Nicolaus Teutonico, features the Coronation of the Virgin, flanked by God the Father and Christ on thrones, surrounded by angels and praying figures. The exterior showcases sculptures of apostles, pilgrims, and musicians playing 15th-century instruments like the lute and hurdy-gurdy. The stone bell tower, with a large belfry, was topped with a pyramidal spire in the 19th century. The rectangular structure includes three naves and a semicircular apse.

The interior reflects a blend of styles due to multiple restorations after earthquakes, especially after 1706, when it was rebuilt in Baroque style. The Assumption altar features marble columns and golden decorations and originally housed a medieval statue of the Virgin, later replaced by a replica by Nicola D’Antino. Another highlight is the Crucifix altar, with a 15th-century wooden sculpture that presents three moments of the Passion depending on the viewing angle. Other artistic treasures include a 1572 wooden baptistery, an 18th-century organ, and valuable paintings near the choir. The church has been closed to the public since January 2017 due to structural collapse caused by heavy snowfall, with restoration works underway.
