Located in the historic center of Balmaseda, the Church of Saint Severinus is one of the finest Gothic churches in the Basque Country. Built during the 14th and 15th centuries on the town’s medieval walls, it combines a mature Castilian Gothic interior with an imposing Baroque façade and bell tower added in the 18th century. Its spacious three-aisled layout, rib-vaulted ceilings and large polygonal apse create an impressive architectural ensemble.
The church is dedicated to Saint Severinus of Bordeaux, a 5th-century bishop associated with Aquitaine and the historic routes that connected France with northern Spain. Over the centuries, the church has been enriched with Renaissance chapels, Neo-Gothic stained-glass windows, historic tombs and remarkable works of religious art, making it one of Balmaseda’s most important cultural and spiritual landmarks.
