The church of Santiago Apóstol, located in Cebreros, is an outstanding Renaissance monument whose construction began in 1550 under the direction of Alonso de Covarrubias, master stonemason, and continued under Pedro de Tolosa after his death. Its construction was delayed for half a century due to economic difficulties, and the construction of a second tower was left unfinished. The temple is characterized by its rectangular floor plan, of the “hall church” type, with three naves separated by cylindrical pillars that support groin vaults and half barrel vaults in the transept. The church, declared of Cultural Interest in 1991, has a remarkable hemispherical dome in the transept and several Baroque altarpieces of great quality attributed to Gabriel Campuzano.
Inside, the main altarpiece, 16 meters high and 10 meters wide, impresses with its artistic richness and its structure divided into five sections. Painted between 1620 and 1623, the altarpiece contains sculptures and paintings by the famous artist Jusepe Leonardo, and is particularly noteworthy for its central tabernacle and its paintings of religious themes, such as The Last Supper and The Ascension. Other important altarpieces include the Immaculate Conception and the Virgin of the Rosary, both decorated by Campuzano.
