The Church of Santa María de O Cebreiro, located in the municipality of Pedrafita do Cebreiro, is a monument of great historical and religious relevance in the context of the Camino de Santiago. Built in the 9th century as an inn for pilgrims, its pre-Romanesque architecture is characterized by imposing slate and granite walls, as well as a bell tower, traditionally used to guide travelers on foggy days, a common difficulty in this mountainous region of Galicia. In addition to its function as a place of worship, the church has witnessed numerous events over the centuries, including the famous “Miracle of the Holy Grail”, which is said to have occurred in the 14th century and attracted pilgrims from all over Europe.
Inside the church, there are valuable pieces of sacred art, such as the chapel of the Miracle, where the reliquary donated by the Catholic Monarchs, the chalice and the paten are exhibited. Also of note is the Romanesque carving of Santa María la Real, a representation of the Virgin and Child from the 12th century. Elements such as the baptismal font, which dates from the 9th century and is the only remaining vestige of the original temple, together with the 12th century Romanesque chalice and paten, are tangible testimonies of the rich religious and cultural history of the region. The church of Santa María de O Cebreiro is not only an important landmark on the Jacobean route, but also a symbol of the faith and devotion that have characterized Galicia over the centuries.
