Abbey of the Holy Spirit

The Eremo di Santo Spirito in Roccamorice, located in the Maiella Mountains, is a former Celestine monastery and a national monument of Italy. Its origins are uncertain, but it is believed to date back to before the 11th century, founded by Benedictine monks. In 1246, Pietro da Morrone, the future Pope Celestine V, restored and expanded the hermitage. In 1278, it was granted monastic status and served as the Celestine Order’s main monastery until 1293.

Over the centuries, it experienced periods of decline and restoration, notably expanded in the 17th century by Prince Caracciolo of San Buono. The monastery was abandoned in 1807 following the suppression of monastic orders. Today, remains of the church, sacristy, and monastery buildings are still visible, spread over multiple levels. Notable features include the church with its medieval inscription, the Oratory of Santa Maria Magdalena, and the Prince’s House, accessible through a rock-hewn corridor. The Scala Santa, with 31 steps, leads to ruined structures, while another 76-step staircase reaches a large covered balcony offering stunning views.
