Wignacourt Tower

Wignacourt Tower, also known as St. Paul’s Bay Tower, was built in 1610 by Grand Master Alof de Wignacourt to defend St. Paul’s Bay, the traditional site of the Apostle Paul’s shipwreck on Malta. It was the first of six coastal watchtowers funded by the Order of St. John to protect Malta from Ottoman and corsair raids. As the first major fortification in the north of Malta, it played a vital strategic role. An artillery battery was added in 1715 to strengthen its defense. Today, Wignacourt Tower stands as Malta’s oldest surviving watchtower and serves as a museum of the island’s military fortifications.
