Saint Joseph’s Oratory

Saint Joseph’s Oratory of Mount Royal, located in Montreal, is the largest church in Canada and one of the most important Catholic shrines in North America. Founded in 1904 by Saint André Bessette, a humble member of the Congregation of Holy Cross, it began as a small chapel dedicated to Saint Joseph and grew into a monumental basilica thanks to popular devotion and the brother’s reputation as a miracle worker.

Over more than sixty years of construction, the Oratory evolved into an impressive architectural complex, combining a Renaissance Revival exterior with an Art Deco interior. Its massive dome—one of the largest in the world—dominates the city skyline and stands as a symbol of faith.

Each year, more than two million visitors and pilgrims come to the shrine. Many climb the steps as an act of devotion, some even on their knees. Inside, deeply symbolic spaces such as the Votive Chapel filled with ex-votos and the tomb of Saint André reflect the spiritual heart of the site.

The Oratory remains a living place of prayer, healing, and pilgrimage, where faith continues to shape the experience of every visitor.
