The monument to the Camino Real de Guadalupe, located in the Ronda del Cañillo in Talavera de la Reina, is an outstanding work for its decoration with more than half a thousand hand-painted ceramic tiles. This monument, promoted mainly by the “Fray Hernando de Talavera” Neighborhood Association, was financed by a popular collection. It represents a Mudejar chapel and its façade has images of 24 famous pilgrims who made the 257-kilometer journey from the Jerónimos Monastery in Madrid to Guadalupe. The monument’s ceramics include representations of Catholic monarchs and the Virgin of Guadalupe, underscoring its historical and cultural importance. This road, traveled several times by Queen Isabella the Catholic, was once as well known as the Camino de Santiago. In addition, the monument is an example of the valuable ceramic craftsmanship of Talavera.
