The ruins of the San Pietro Monastery in Roccamontepiano, founded in the Early Middle Ages, initially served as a hospital for travelers along the Tratturo, later becoming a monastery where Celestine V established a monastic community. It was abandoned in 1501, and over time, neglect and natural disasters led to its deterioration. In the early 2000s, local efforts began the preservation and reopening of the site for cultural and social events.
Today, the monastery stands as a symbol of Roccamontepiano’s historical identity. In this evocative setting, Tarcisio Lisio’s book “Legend of Charlemagne and Arlinda” was presented, retelling ancient local tales of the Frankish king’s presence in the region. The story, set during the fall of the Lombard Kingdom and Charlemagne’s arrival, weaves intrigues, passions, conflicts, and philosophical lessons about life, love, and hate, offering a profound reflection relevant to today’s society.
