The Monastery of Santa María de Poblet is one of Europe’s most significant Cistercian monasteries. Founded in 1151 by Ramon Berenguer IV and Petronilla, it played a pivotal role in the religious, cultural, and political life of medieval Catalonia and the Crown of Aragon. Built on a hill, the complex was designed with a fortified appearance and features a harmonious blend of Romanesque and Gothic architectural elements, visible in its imposing church, expansive cloister, and numerous chapels.
Over the centuries, Poblet also served as the burial site for the kings of Aragon, underscoring its importance as a symbol of royal power and devotion. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991, the monastery is renowned for its intricately carved capitals, detailed cloister galleries, and a rich collection of medieval art and manuscripts. Today, it remains a vibrant center for monastic life and a treasured monument of Catalonia.
