Founded in 1530 by Prince Petru Rareș, Probota Monastery is a gem of Romanian heritage and part of the famed Painted Churches of Northern Moldavia. Dedicated to Saint Nicholas, the church features a triconch Byzantine design and stunning frescoes from 1532. Interior paintings include the Last Judgment in the porch vault and the Ecumenical Councils in the narthex, while the main dome shows Christ Pantocrator encircled by angels and evangelists. Though many exterior frescoes have faded, fragments of the Akathist Hymn and Jesse Tree remain.
As the necropolis of the Rareș family, the church houses richly decorated tombs. Despite later damage, extensive restoration—supported by UNESCO—helped preserve this spiritual and artistic treasure. Listed as a World Heritage Site in 1993, Probota is now home to a female monastic community engaged in art workshops and social outreach, upholding the medieval Moldavian legacy.
