The Humor Monastery, founded in 1530 by the grand logothete Toader Bubuiog, is a masterpiece of Moldavian religious architecture and one of northern Romania’s famous Painted Monasteries. Dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin and Saint George, it features an innovative open porch and crypt. Its reddish-hued exterior frescoes depict scenes such as the Akathist Hymn, the Life of Saint Nicholas, and the Last Judgment. A votive painting portrays Petru Rareș and his family. Though dissolved by the Habsburgs in 1783, the monastery was restored in the 20th century and reopened as a nunnery in 1991. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993.
