The hermitage of Valsordo, located 2 km from Cebreros in the province of Avila, is a Catholic temple dedicated to the Virgin of Valsordo, patron saint of the municipality. This sanctuary has been an important center of devotion since ancient times, with records dating back to the 8th century, when the Muslims invaded the Iberian Peninsula. The Virgin, originally called Nuestra Señora de las Virtudes, has been the object of numerous miracles that have strengthened her cult over the centuries. The hermitage, located in a natural environment surrounded by pine trees and close to the Alberche River, stands out for its historical relevance and religious importance in the municipality of Cebreros. Every year a pilgrimage is held in honor of the Virgin, where the faithful participate in masses, processions and other festive activities.
The architecture of the Ermita de Valsordo has been modified several times, giving it a varied style. The original temple was enlarged in 1680, adding a sacristy, a dressing room for the Virgin and other decorative elements. The complex includes an additional chapel known as the “Casa de la Virgen Chica” and a garden surrounded by granite columns and stone walls. In addition, there are Stations of the Cross and altars where open-air masses are celebrated. The hermitage has witnessed historical events and miracles, such as the rescue of a worker in 1680 and the intercession of the Virgin in a battle between Christians and Muslims, which strengthened its place in the hearts of the people of Cebreros.
