The hermitage of San Pedro de Alcántara, located in the area of “La Muela” and currently closed, was built in honor of San Pedro de Alcántara, famous for his austere life and his dedication to the poor. A tradition tells that San Pedro saved a child from drowning in a well that is still inside the hermitage, although it is now buried to avoid accidents.
St. Peter of Alcantara was an important support for St. Teresa of Jesus in her reform of Carmel. Teresa deeply valued his advice and considered his writings on prayer and meditation as a true spiritual treasure. St. Teresa founded her first reformed convent in Avila in 1562, a project that she herself recognized as inspired and strengthened by the friendship and advice of St. Peter.
