Church of St Peter

The Church of San Pedro, located in front of the Alcazar Gate and in the Plaza del Mercado Grande of Avila, is an outstanding Romanesque temple begun in the 12th century and finished in the 13th century. Declared a National Monument in 1914 and a World Heritage Site in 1985, it has a Latin cross plan with three naves and a triple apse decorated with sculptures of plant, geometric and biblical motifs. The central nave, higher than the lateral ones, is covered by barrel vaults and ribbed vaults, showing the transition to Gothic.

In its western façade there is a large rose window over the main doorway, while the north entrance has a detailed decoration in its five archivolts. The church also has a tower over the transept and, in its interior, there are mural panels, Renaissance altars and the altarpiece of the main chapel. Its historical importance is reflected in the relevance of this temple during the Middle Ages, when the monarchs swore an oath there to respect the fueros of Castile.
