The church of Santa María la Mayor in Arévalo is a representative work of the Mudejar style in Castilla y León, built between the 12th and 13th centuries. Located in the Plaza de la Villa, its bell tower is unique in Europe, since a street crosses the base of the tower, which rises in a series of masonry and brick caissons decorated with pointed arches. The façade of the chevet presents a semicircular apse and blind arches, with a brick and masonry design characteristic of the region.
Inside, the 14th century Gothic paintings stand out, including a Pantocrator in the apse, discovered after the removal of the altarpiece. This pantocrator shows Christ blessing and holding a sphere, surrounded by deteriorated scenes and framed by a heavenly Jerusalem. A Mudejar coffered ceiling can also be seen in the presbytery, while the nave is covered with a simple structure of pairs and knuckles.
