The Abbey Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Bominaco, located in the province of L’Aquila, is a significant Romanesque structure with origins in early Christianity. It was part of a Benedictine monastic complex founded possibly in the 8th century under Charlemagne or over a pagan temple dedicated to Venus. The church, mentioned in historical documents since the 11th century, has elements from later renovations, including inscriptions dating to 1180 and 1223. Its exterior features a simple facade, three apses, and a bell tower. The interior comprises three naves divided by twelve columns, likely repurposed from nearby Peltuinum, and a raised presbytery with a ciborium from 1233. Notable furnishings include an ornate ambo, a Paschal candlestick, and a 12th-century abbot’s chair. The church remains a cultural and spiritual landmark, offering panoramic views of the surrounding valley.
