Church of Our Lady of Assumption

The church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in El Tiemblo, Ávila, is an outstanding example of Elizabethan Gothic, built in the 16th century, with a 15th-century tower that could have belonged to an earlier temple. Its architecture combines decorative and structural elements, such as the granite spheres that decorate the cornices and archivolts, and its three naves separated by sturdy columns. The interior houses valuable artistic treasures, including an 18th-century Baroque altarpiece, a 15th-century Virgin with Child, and a 16th-century Ecce Homo and Crucifixion. The main chapel, also from the 16th century, is covered with ribbed vaults.

Spiritually, the church is important because of its connection to the Pilgrim’s Road to Santiago de Compostela, and also because of its connection to Saint Teresa of Jesus, who stopped here during her travels between Avila and Toledo, emphasizing its importance as a place of devotion on the religious itinerary.
