The Basilica of St. Rita in Cascia, built in the 20th century through the initiative of Mother Maria Teresa Fasce and the support of Pope Pius XI, is an important pilgrimage site dedicated to the life and devotion of St. Rita. The church, elevated to a minor basilica in 1955 by Pope Pius XII, holds the saint’s relics, with an imposing white travertine facade and two spires with bell towers. The interior of the basilica features neo-Byzantine and neo-Renaissance style architecture, with artwork depicting scenes from the life of St. Rita and other Augustinian saints, as well as a chapel dedicated to the veneration of the saint’s relics.
This imposing basilica, with its wide Greek-cross nave, is adorned with frescoes, sculptures and rich marble and bronze ornaments. The side altars, altarpieces and Stations of the Cross help create an atmosphere of deep spirituality and devotion among the faithful who come to seek consolation and hope. The Basilica of St. Rita in Cascia, besides being an important place of worship, is also an architectural and artistic testimony to the fervent devotion to this saint of the Catholic Church.
