The Sanctuary of Saint Nunzio Sulprizio is located in Pescosansonesco, Italy, near the Riparossa spring, a site considered sacred due to its connection with the saint. Nunzio Sulprizio (1817-1836) was a young Italian worker known for his faith and patience in suffering. He was canonized in 2018 by Pope Francis and is considered the patron saint of workers and young people.
The first church dedicated to Nunzio was built in 1890, near the cave where he would wash his wounds in the spring. After his beatification in 1963, the idea of a new sanctuary emerged. Construction began in 1979 and was completed in 1990, replacing the original church. The modern sanctuary features an imposing hexagonal structure, with raw concrete walls resembling a cave-cathedral. The façade has a grand polychrome mosaic depicting Jesus enthroned with Saint Nunzio and other saints. Behind the altar, a miraculous spring continues to flow from the rock, attracting pilgrims.
The sanctuary is a major pilgrimage site, especially on the 5th of each month, when indulgences are granted to visitors. Inside, there is a collection of crutches left by the faithful as ex-votos. Saint Nunzio’s body, however, rests in San Domenico Soriano Church in Naples, where he lived his final years. His devotion continues to grow, inspiring people around the world.
