Sanctuary of Santa Maria delle Grazie

The Sanctuary of Santa Maria delle Grazie, with its adjoining convent in San Giovanni Rotondo, is world-renowned as the place where Padre Pio lived from 1916 until his death. Built in 1538 and later expanded, it became too small for the immense number of pilgrims who flocked to the saint, leading to the construction of a larger church in 1959.

The old church preserves Padre Pio’s cell, the crypt where his remains once rested, and relics such as those of Saint Massimiana. The new church, with three marble aisles, is dominated by a striking mosaic of Our Lady of Grace crowned in 1959, with Padre Pio rising toward her. Today, the sanctuary remains a major spiritual center, a place of prayer and devotion for millions of faithful from around the world.
