The Minor Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Manaoag, located in Pangasinan, Philippines, is one of the oldest and most revered Marian shrines in the country. Founded by the Augustinians in 1600, the mission was taken over by the Dominicans in 1605. The present church was begun in 1701 on a hilltop, offering refuge from tribal raids. Over the centuries, the shrine has endured natural disasters, war, and destruction, including being burned during the Philippine Revolution in 1898. Through the resilience of the faithful and the Dominicans, it has been rebuilt and preserved.
The shrine houses a revered image of the Virgin Mary under the title of Our Lady of the Rosary, which was canonically crowned in 1926, affirming the miracles attributed to her intercession. In 2014, Pope Francis elevated the shrine to the rank of minor basilica, and in 2011, Pope Benedict XVI granted it a spiritual bond with the Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome, allowing pilgrims to receive plenary indulgences.
Today, the basilica is a vibrant spiritual and pilgrimage center, welcoming thousands of visitors annually. The grounds feature a museum, candle gallery, rosary garden, pilgrims’ center, blessing area, souvenir shops, and more. The shrine continues to be a beacon of faith, hope, and devotion for Filipinos and pilgrims from around the world.
