Pontifical French Seminary

The Pontifical French Seminary in Rome, founded in 1853 by Father Louis-Marie Barazer de Lannurien, is a prominent institution for the formation of French-speaking priests. Located near the Pantheon, it occupies the Church of Santa Chiara and an adjacent former convent, both built over the ruins of the Baths of Agrippa. During WWII, the seminary sheltered Jewish refugees, and it hosted French delegates during Vatican II. It has a rich history of theological education, Gregorian chant, and cultural contribution, remaining under the direction of the French Bishops’ Conference. Today, it forms seminarians in partnership with the Pontifical Gregorian University.
